What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small metal posts that replace missing teeth. During a minor surgical procedure, the implant is placed into the jawbone where the missing tooth was located. Acting as an artificial tooth root, the implant provides a sturdy base for a restoration, such as a dental crown, allowing it to look, feel, and function like a natural tooth.

Getting dental implants is a major step in restoring your smile, and it’s important to know what’s involved before moving forward. My son (13yrs) is terrified of going to the dentist because of bad experiences in the past. Today he required 2 teeth to be pulled on top of his regular cleaning. The dental team at Forest Glen went above and beyond to accomidate his extreme nervousness. They answered all the questions he was worried about, explained what they were doing each step of they way and took small breaks in-between making sure he was okay. As soon as he walked out of the appointment he said "mom that wasn't at all what I expected and I am glad you made me stick it out". He is finally after many many years on his way to feeling comfortable and safe :) :) :) If your looking for a new dentist I highly recommend Forest Glen Dentistry.

I was very nervous going to the dentist because I've had poor experiences in the past and needed a few cavities filled.. That being said, the dental team at Forest Glen was amazing every step of the way, from my cleaning to the fillings and then teeth whitening. Natasha at the front was also great getting my entire family scheduled for cleanings. Would definitely recommend for anybody looking for a new dentist!

Leaving this review because I had possibly one of the best experiences at the dentist to date here. I came in for an emergency appointment and had to get at least two of my wisdom teeth removed as soon as possible, I was terrified to book this appointment knowing I would only have the option of oral sedation and no anesthesia. With that being said, Dr. Sam was phenomenal. He was patient, gentle, kind and most of all empathetic to my anxiety. He made the process very easy to undergo and even allowed me to have another person in the room with me during for support. I was blown away by not only the procedure being so seamless but the recovery? Barely felt a thing and still feeling amazing. I am not one to write google reviews even when asked but for this experience I felt it was only right. Great job to the entire team here from the front desk to the dental assistants and hygienists! My new dentist for as long as possible.

Why You Might Need Dental Implants

Natural teeth play a crucial role in maintaining the structure and appearance of your smile, while also allowing you to chew and speak comfortably. When teeth are lost, dental implants can provide the necessary support to restore both function and aesthetics, helping you maintain your smile’s natural shape and height.

A missing tooth can cause neighboring teeth to shift out of proper alignment, leading to bite issues and increased risk of oral health problems. Even the loss of a single tooth can set off a series of changes that affect your overall dental health, alter the shape of your face, and reduce your quality of life. Dental implants help prevent these complications by filling gaps and maintaining the proper alignment of your teeth.

Even if the immediate effects of missing teeth aren’t noticeable, bone resorption is an inevitable issue. When a tooth is lost, the body naturally breaks down and reabsorbs the bone that once supported it, redirecting those minerals to other areas. This process can weaken the jawbone over time, affecting the structure of your smile and overall dental health.

When teeth are present in the jawbone, they provide constant stimulation that promotes the growth of new bone tissue. However, when teeth are lost, this stimulation stops, and the bone begins to deteriorate. Over time, this bone loss can lead to a shortened jaw and chin, contributing to wrinkles and a sunken look in the cheeks and lips, affecting the overall appearance of your face.

Dental implants are the next best option to having natural teeth. By replacing missing teeth with implants, you can help prevent or reverse the issues associated with tooth loss, such as bone deterioration, shifting teeth, and changes to your facial structure, keeping your smile healthy and strong.

Tooth loss can have a major impact on your self-esteem and oral health. Missing teeth create gaps that may lead to bite discomfort, trouble eating, and long-term problems like bone loss or teeth shifting out of place. Dental implants can effectively address these concerns, restoring your smile’s function and appearance.

  • Restore Your Natural Appearance – Dental implants are designed to look and feel just like your natural teeth. Custom-made to blend seamlessly with your smile, they are sized, shaped, and coloured to match your unique bite and enamel, providing a natural and flawless appearance.
  • Feel Confident in Your Comfort – Once placed, the implant’s titanium post fuses with your jawbone, creating a stable foundation for crowns, bridges, or implant-supported dentures. This secure fit means your implant will stay firmly in place, allowing you to smile, eat, and laugh without worrying about movement or discomfort.
  • Improve Bone Strength – After tooth loss, the supporting bone can weaken and deteriorate over time. Dental implants encourage new bone growth around the implant, helping to maintain and strengthen the bone structure, preserving your facial integrity and oral health.

Dental implants offer a durable, long-term solution that mimics the look and feel of natural teeth. With proper care and good oral hygiene, implants can last for decades, providing a reliable and natural-feeling replacement for missing teeth.

Dental Implant Restorations

The restoration is the visible part of your dental implant, often referred to as the “false tooth.” While the implant itself is hidden beneath the gums, the restoration—such as a crown, bridge, or denture—sits on top, giving the appearance of a natural tooth and seamlessly completing your smile.

  • Dental Crown – A dental crown is the most common type of implant restoration, used to cover a single-tooth implant. It provides a natural look and function, seamlessly replacing a missing tooth.
  • Dental Bridge – A dental bridge is used to replace multiple missing teeth in a row. Supported by one or two implants, it spans the gap and restores both function and appearance. For extensive tooth loss, a full implant-supported bridge can replace an entire upper or lower arch, typically secured by four or more implants.
  • Implant Denture – Implant dentures offer increased stability by attaching to small implants, providing a secure fit that significantly enhances comfort and functionality compared to traditional removable dentures.

How It Feels

While the idea of having a metal implant placed into your jawbone might sound intimidating, the actual procedure is much more comfortable than you might expect.

Using a mild anesthetic, we ensure your mouth is completely numb, so you won’t feel any pain during the surgery. With the aid of advanced dental technology, implants are placed quickly and accurately, minimizing discomfort and reducing recovery time.

Many patients find the implant procedure surprisingly easy, with some even feeling relaxed or drowsy during the brief 30-minute process. The most challenging part is often just keeping your mouth open for a short period.

After the procedure, it’s normal to experience some mild swelling, bruising, or discomfort, but these symptoms are easily managed with prescribed instructions. You can expect the surgical site to start feeling better within a week.

Dental implants have a nearly 95% success rate, making them one of the safest and most reliable treatments available in dentistry today.

What to Expect on Your Dental Implant Treatment Journey

The process of getting a dental implant is often far more comfortable than most people anticipate.

Assessment

Your dental implant journey begins with a thorough consultation to determine if implants are the right option for you. This involves taking X-rays and a 3D cone-beam CT scan to assess the condition of your jawbone. Additionally, a scan or impression of your teeth will be taken to plan the precise placement and angle of your implant.

Inserting the Implant

To ensure your comfort, a local anesthetic is administered to numb the area completely. The dentist will carefully create a small opening in the gum and bone, inserting the implant post into this space. In some cases, sutures may be used to close the gums around the implant.

Finalizing the Restoration

After a healing period of several months, you will return to have the final restoration placed. At this appointment, the custom restoration, such as a crown, bridge, or denture, is securely attached to the implant, giving you a fully functional and natural-looking tooth.

Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and, most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Cost of Dental Implants in Kitchener

In Kitchener, the cost of a single dental implant typically ranges from $3,000 to $6,000 or more. For those requiring full-mouth reconstruction, costs can vary widely from $6,000 to $60,000 and beyond. Implant-supported dentures generally average around $30,000. It’s important to note that implant costs can’t be accurately quoted over the phone due to the complexity of the procedure and the individual factors involved in each case. A detailed consultation and assessment are necessary to provide a precise estimate tailored to your specific needs.

The cost of dental implant surgery is influenced by several key factors:

  • Type and Number of Implants: The specific type of implant and the number required will significantly affect the overall cost.
  • Materials and Supplies: The quality and type of materials used, such as the implant post and restoration, can vary in price.
  • Expertise of the Dental Team: The time, skill, and experience of the dental professionals involved in your care play a crucial role in the pricing.
  • Surgery Complexity and Location: The complexity of the procedure, including any preparatory work needed, and the location of the dental practice can impact costs.
  • Recovery Support: Your healing process is an important part of the journey, and ongoing support from your dental team is factored into the overall cost.

Every dental implant case is unique, so it’s essential to consult with a dentist and undergo an oral exam. This allows us to assess your specific needs and offer a range of treatment options tailored to you. We’re here to provide a detailed evaluation and a personalized quote to help you make an informed decision about your care.

Are There Other Solutions for Missing Teeth?

Missing teeth can also be replaced with other options, such as dental bridges, which are suitable for filling gaps caused by one to three missing teeth. For multiple missing teeth or when the entire upper or lower arch is affected, removable dentures or other dental prosthetics may be used.

While dental implants may have a higher upfront cost compared to bridges or dentures, they offer superior security and durability. Unlike removable prosthetics, which require specific maintenance, periodic adjustments, or replacements over time, dental implants are cared for just like your natural teeth—with regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups. With proper care, dental implants can provide a long-lasting, often lifelong, solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental implants are designed to look completely natural, so no one will be able to tell that they aren’t your real teeth. The metal screws that anchor the implants are hidden beneath the gums, while the lifelike restorations on top are custom-made to match the colour, shape, and size of your natural teeth.

Dentures and implants serve different functions and have distinct advantages. Dentures rest on the gums and can be removed, while implants are fixed securely into the jawbone, providing a stable and strong bite. Each option has its own set of benefits and drawbacks, and the best choice depends on your individual needs. A consultation with us will help determine which treatment is the most suitable for you.

If dental implants aren’t the right fit for you, other options such as dental bridges, partial dentures, or full dentures might be more appropriate. To explore these alternatives and understand what works best for your situation, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with us. We’ll be happy to guide you through all the available solutions and address any questions you have.

Dental implants are generally suitable for adults with good oral health. Candidates need sufficient jawbone strength to support the implant and healthy gums to minimize the risk of complications. If you’re unsure about your eligibility, give us a call—we can assess your oral health and discuss potential treatment options to improve your candidacy for implants, or suggest alternative solutions for replacing missing teeth.

Absolutely! Dental implants are designed to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. Whether topped with a crown, bridge, or implant-supported dentures, the restoration is custom-made to match the shape, color, and size of your existing teeth, providing a comfortable and natural-looking result that often makes it hard to distinguish the implant from your real teeth.

Advancements in dental implant technology have made the procedure highly predictable and typically pain-free. The process is carried out with great precision and care to ensure minimal discomfort. With proper aftercare, most patients experience only slight swelling and little to no bleeding. Your comfort is our priority, so please let us know if you have any concerns or anxieties, and we will work to make your experience as pleasant as possible.

You can usually go back to work the day after your implant procedure. However, the exact time needed for recovery depends on your specific treatment plan, which we will review with you beforehand. We’ll make sure you have all the post-care instructions and guidance you need for a smooth recovery.

Regular checkups are crucial to keep your implants in good condition. Just like your natural teeth, implants need to be professionally cleaned and monitored. We generally suggest appointments every six months, although your dentist may adjust this schedule based on your personal needs.

Maintain your dental implants with the same routine care as your natural teeth. This includes brushing, flossing, regular cleanings, and attending checkups. Report any concerns to your dentist as soon as they arise.

Dental implants are intended to be a permanent solution and do not require routine replacement. With the right care, your implants can last a lifetime, providing a durable and reliable restoration.
